Movie Review - Monuments Men

Disclosure: Its been 2years since I wrote anything more than bplans, and its time I revisit my writing skills. I know for a fact that I lost the edge, nevertheless better now than never :) Hence with the support of a friend, here I begin again with a movie review. Being my 1st review ever (I guess), I'll follow the traditional style of writing.

ThesisThe Monuments Men, a classic drama based on a true story, set in the backdrop of World War II in Nazi Germany, has all the elements one can expect from a biography. Led by George Clooney, its the story of a group of art lovers trying to save culture. Can this group who know more about music of Davids harp than battle-cries be able to face war for art? Does the death of any individual justify saving art? Is art more important or human life? This forms the basis of the story.

Plot Summary: Led by George Clooney, a group of seven (curators, art directors, historians) are tasked to retrieve/save art from Hitler camps and return to their rightful owners. The art stolen from all German invasions of Europe, is hid within German enemy lines, initially intended to be displayed in the private museum of Hitler; but with Germany losing the battle, the army is under orders to destroy the art. The platoon of seven historians and art enthusiasts set out to find the hideouts in Germany and retrieve the art racing against time from the invading Russians seeking to steal and locals Germans tasked to destroy it.

Analysis: Contemporary drama, with its share of witty one liners, death, war, Nazi atrocities. Directed, co-produced & led by George Clooney; all seven characters in the platoon get an equal share of performance. Inexperienced in  war, but determined to save the art and return to rightful owners they depict far more resilient towards death than one would expect from a bunch of intellectuals. While the movie revolves around the story and with very little chance for intensity, every actor does his best. The direction and screen play are really the strong points. The movie rarely shows the German atrocities (there is one scene showing a bag full of gold teeth collected in invasions and maybe one or two more) and the focus remains on the story and on the art.

Conclusion: Though its not just another art heist movie, and has no unrealistic stunts and no heroes running and jumping on high roofs; the story does keep the audience engaged. However its very unlikely that it'll be a commercial success for its difficult for audience to connect with the characters unless they understand this one statement by the lead Frank Stokes (Clooney): "You can wipe out an entire generation, can burn their homes to ground and somehow they'll find their way back, but if you destroy their history, their achievements; its as if they never existed and this is what Hitler exactly wants".

Overall Rating: 3/5
Positives: Direction, screen play
Negatives: Not much scope for artists, predictable storyline

Structuring the company

Recently I have hit a road block, a major one. I can't find business executives !! Now that IT jobs are back, people seem to prefer a job in the call center than of a business executive in a startup (thought the perks through commission are much much higher !! ). This is where I realized, I was doing a grave mistake. With the initial few clients coming from word of mouth publicity, I haven't really given full attention to structuring the company based on the clients.

As a services startup in power industry, potentially everyone is a client. Anyone who needs electricity for next 25yrs is a client. But whom do I want to concentrate on? Should I try to tap the consumer market directly or start with the bigger clients? The ironic situation would be that the bigger clients who could afford solar solutions might not prefer a startup, and the individual consumer who would cannot afford.

With this problem in mind, I set out to structure the company. To decide on the divisions and market I'll be overseeing and those I'll delegate. To choose the regions served in 1st stage and when the planned branches should start. What would be the guidelines for targets assigned to the executives working part time and those for full time.

brb with answers :-)

Gulaal - Aaramb hai prachand

Aarambh hai prachand,
Bole mastakon ke jhund,
Aaj jung ki ghadi ki tum guhaar do.
Aan baan shaan ya ki jaan ka ho daan,
Aaj ek dhanush ke baan pe utaar do,
Aarambh hai prachand,
Bole mastakon ke jhund,
Aaj jung ki ghadi ki tum guhar do
Aan baan shaan ya ki jaan ka ho daan,
Aaj ek dhanush ke baan pe utaar do,
Aarambh hai prachand…

Mann kare so praan de,
Jo mann kare so praan le,
Wahi to ek sarv shaktimaan hai.
Krishn ki pukaar hai yeh bhaagwat ka saar hai,
Ki yudh hi tho veer ka pramaan hai...
Kauravon ki bheed ho ya pandavon ka need ho,
Jo lad saka hai wohi to mahaan hai..

Jeet ki hawas nahi, kisi pe koi vash nahin,
Kya zindagi hai thokaron pe maar do,
Maut anth hai nahi tho maut se bhi kyu dare?
Yeh jaake aasmaan mein dahaad do,

Aarambh hai prachand,
Bole mastakon ke jhund,
Aaj jung ki ghadi ki tum guhar do
Aan baan shaan ya ki jaan ka ho daan,
Aaj ek dhanush ke baan pe utaar do,
Aarambh hai prachand…

Uss kavi ko aaj tum nakaar do,
Bheegti nasson mein aaj, phoolti rago mein aaj,
aag ki lapat ka tum baghaar do,

Aarambh hai prachand,
Bole mastako ke jhund,
Aaj jung ki ghadi ki tum guhar do
Aan baan shaan ya ki jaan ka ho daan,
Aaj ek dhanush ke baan pe utaar do,
Aarambh hai prachand
Hoye hoye hoye…

I'm just not able to get over Gulaal lyrics.
"Jeet ki hawas nahi, kisi pe koi vash nahin,
Kya zindagi hai thokaron pe maar do,
Maut anth hai nahi tho maut se bhi kyu dare?
Yeh jaake aasmaan mein dahaad do"

How could someone write such lyrics? What mindset should one be in to do that ??? Damn ... I have listened to the song a min of 50times over the last 10hrs. I just just just cant get over the lyrics. Each line has such depth !!

Gulaal - Lyrics
Leader - Screenplay
Prasthanam - Dialogues
Raajneeti - Story

Fear of unknown %$*&#@%

Nowadays I have soo many updates/experiences that when I sit to write them down I feel lazy that I have to write SOOO much, and eventually I write nothing :D

Life has been good, work is progressing at a faster rate than I expected. So far good. When life is on a smooth ride, there's always a roadbump, a speedbreaker, to slow you down. I'm still waiting for it and I hope it wouldn't be in line of work.

Two of my college seniors n close friends are getting married. Awesome!! Been a while (since Nov) since I attended a marriage where I know both groom n bride :-)

I happened to see Gulaal yesterday, man awesome lyrics. I have no clue how I missed this movie. All the recent political movies I saw have been amazing, simple amazing. 1st it was leader, a good political movie after quite sometime. Then came Prasthanam, it literally overshadowed leader's story in my heart. and along came Rajneeti, and now Gulaal.

I see a general decline in the online presence of my batchmates. Not just IIIT, but in general. Earlier they used to blog, be active on fb, have witty status mesgs on gtalk, send those funny n some stupid fwd mails etc etc. Nowadays I don't see any of those happening. No blogs, invisible mode in gtalk, n activity on fb would limit to personal mesgs sent to someone on their list or sharing some videos.
Another sign of getting old ??! If this is 25, what will happen at 30 !!! Scares me :-)

My 1st accident

I have a very good track record, no accidents or even a scratch on my bike in last 3+yrs. Today was my 1st accident, and here goes the story

Now... this is a story all about how
my life got flipped, turned upside down,
and I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there
I'll tell you how I met with my 1st accident fair.

In... Hyderabad I started to drive,
and 3yrs I drove car and bike,
chillin' out, maxin', relaxin', all cool
and without an accident I burnt all the fuel.

When a friend sent a sms "I'm up to no good"
I was driving on the road with no hood,
I replied back how sweet I am ,
when everyone on road I gave a damn.

I lift my eyes "bang" I hit the rear,
the auto driver gave me the worst stare,
His legs scratched and my handle bent,
all I could do is offer my money unspent.

I pulled up to friends house about seven or eight
and I yelled to her "yo home, and I feel great,"
I looked at my bike, still scratch less,
and decided it was all in gods bless.

So, thats the story. I know I screwed the song, but it started very nice in my mind, but soon I couldn't find the right words, and too tired to spend more time :D
So My bike and I stand scratchless, while the poor auto guy had his legs scratched and auto with a big dent. I offered him 200bucks and left the place, went shopping for office furniture and now back home.

Hungry, dinner time :-)

Cribbing !

I'm going bald !! Nope I don't have a bald head yet, but I know I'm going bald.

A year back girls in my office used to cry over the fact that my hair is more silky. I always loved to take care of my hair. For the last 6months I neglected it, very badly. And for the last two months I have been roaming around in the sun without any headgear.

You know what happens, the hair becomes dry, very dry. And also start to have a receding hairline, which sucks. But then do I really have an option?? If I use any headgear (helmet or cloth), I'd have flat hair by the time I go to meet my clients. If I do not use a helmet I have receding hair :(

God save me :( I don't want to die bald.

The excitement !!

What happens when a kid who just started his business, gets to meet a multimillion dollar company chairman and ceo through his contacts, shakes hand, sips tea at his residence and discusses work with him?

He grins. Oh yah, my uncle introduced me to some xyz who is a classmate of this abc, chairman and ceo of a lmn company. And later xyz and I met this abc. xyz was telling me later that I had this constant smile on my face and a spark of excitement in my eyes which apparently is a good thing coz it reassures the person :-)

So yah thats how my Sunday went. Woke up at 5:30AM, got ready and met these people from 9 to 12 !! Not that I would have had any better thing to do, but I do miss the lazy sunday morning.

I know how silly this post sounds/reads, but I'm a bit excited. Hence the post.

Lessons learnt:
1. Take tea/coffee when its offered, don't overact :P Its a sign of disrespect if you reject whats being offered at the persons residence.
2. Put on easy to remove shoes when going to meet at a residence.

Updates !!

There are probably a million things I want to pen down:

1. Work is good, pretty smooth start till now. I have one employee working full time, one part time, one consultant and two on contract basis for electrical works.
2. Also jumping into LED works. Its all energy saving afterall :-)
3. It JUST started raining, as I'm writing this :D
4. Life is getting boring apart from work excitement. Waiting for friends to get married.
I attended a marriage recently, an acquaintance from business and I realized how much fun it would have been if all my friends were in India. sob sob

5. I'm expanding my office to take over the whole hall. Roomies are being supportive, poor guys :D
6. I have to buy a lot of office furniture. Already bought a all-in-one printer. Need three computer tables, two chairs etc.
7. My friend is coming from Dubai to help me with the technical stuff. He'll stay for a few days with me.
8. My brochures and website would be ready by wednesday. I'm sooo excited :D
9. Ahh ...what else, oh yah I lost 5pounds :D I'm fit again.

The only sad story rt now is I keep having these silly fights with someone I really don't want to. Life is sooooo simple but some people just complicate it huh!!

I could write a lot more, but I got to be elsewhere now :-) adios

Tensed ?

I always knew I have a good knack to run business', but never knew starting one would be such a hassle :-). There are a million little things to take care of and its a chicken or the egg story at every step!!

Phew ...

Business kickoff is good, but looking at the number of solar power plants coming up, I'm really tensed about the new competition. I really feel, I should have started back in 2008 when I initially decided, but then no point thinking over it rt :-). Looks like I have lost the opportunity to build a solar plant till 2013, atleast for public purchase. Ofcourse we never know how things would go in the private sector.

There is this incredible wealth of information I have acquired over the last few months, (inspite of my laziness ;) ) which I just hope I could put to proper use. All I need from here, is patience, persistence and self motivation.

I hired an engineer who will be my trump card for the next step, he is expected to join from June 1st, which means I'll have to take an office space or atleast 2 cubicles/cabins. More costs.

I'll be using tempest advertising for all PR related stuff including website, brochure etc etc. Doesn't come cheap, but then I could invest that time in my business. Outsourcing is how we have lived.

Just few updates from the back of my mind, got a long day ahead, time is running by, and its already Friday :( wish the clock rotates back 1yr :D

On a different note, as a sequel to this post (http://saaketh-preetham.blogspot.com/2008/05/i-cheat-on-her.html) I bought a new mobile, my 3rd phone in 6yrs. I had to sell the HTC due to its battery backup. Bought a Nokia 7230 (http://www.nokia.co.in/find-products/products/nokia-7230), basic features, no touch screen (I don't like touch), good battery backup, wide screen. Thats all I need :-) n Oh its a slide phone, I always had a thing for slide phones :-). Strange that Nokia didn't come up with a piece like this earlier. But better late than never isn't it.

I had a nice 3day trip home, not to relax though, along with few family members. I had to sleep for a day after coming back :D but it was worth it. Had lot of laughs, miss cousins, it would have been a blast if any/all of them were in India. huh !!

The hard truth !!!

My heart has been bleeding blood for quite a while regarding the focus of media on non-trivial issues.

Today, Shashi Tharoor, in his interview to NDTV made a question, just one question to Barkha Dutt. In the last few weeks there were a couple of highly placed delegates who visited India, there were some PMs who visited India, there are soo many things happening in the ministry of external affairs and he tweets about them too. So why didn't any media report any of these. Why is media only focussed on controversies with no proof and why doesn't it report to the public the actual happenings in the govt, things that actually make a difference to thier lives, things that change the way of living.

I love Hindu, for it stands to be the only newspaper which just mentioned Sachins 200 in front page and detailed article in sports page on a day when there were other major political changes happening. It remains to be the only paper whose main article remains to be the PMs visit and policies on nuclear deal and secondary article on Tharoor. It happens to be the only print or otherwise media which appears to maintain the integrity.

I bow to thee !!!

I'm hiring

1st lesson learnt in business, don't try to do everything yourself to save 10bucks, you could earn a 100 if the time is utilized otherwise !!!

I tried to overdo things, take care of office design, website design, certifications, registrations, accounts, blah blah blah everything. Net result I lost focus for a while, on what is the most important thing, actual business. Luckily I didn't lose much as govt is drafting some new policies and everyone is in a standby mode.

Now I need to hire employees, my 1st one being a Solar Design n Installation Engineer. This is getting very difficult, esp in India. I need someone with 1.5-2yrs experience. Is it too much to ask? Training a electrical engineer has become very very costly n then there is the attrition problem, but for now doesn't look like I have much of a choice !!!

Anyone interested??

Good things

A new post from a one time regular blogger, reminded me that there is an end to everything. Especially in the internet age of this 21st century nothing stays forever. Blogging was a fad few years back, though the original idea of a blog was to have an online journal, it slowly turned into a place where people could find audience for their thoughts, and later it was just about the audience and no of comments. Not that I have anything against it, but it wouldn't really work for long coz you'd have to keep up with your writing skills, stick to the theme (like the newspaper columnists do) and constantly work on luring more audience.

So was the case with myspace, next orkut, wouldbe twitter. The idea of finding audience on net is appealing but has to be constantly reworked n strategy redefined based on the mindset of your audience. You would not be able to be yourself, coz you'll have to serve to their needs. SRK can't put down his frustration on KKRs coz his audience would just be disappointed, Bachan can't scold his daughter in law even if he felt like coz thats not expected from him.

Most of the regular blogs I used to visit are in a coma, so changing the list on the right side of the page.

This is just an arbit thought, n that's what this blog is about, my thoughts. So for the minute few who read it, ignore if you got bored :)

Happy Times

So long sad times
Go long bad times
We are rid of you at last

Howdy gay times
Cloudy gray times
You are now a thing of the past

Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let's sing a song of cheer again
Happy days are here again

Altogether shout it now
There's no one
Who can doubt it now
So let's tell the world about it now
Happy days are here again

Your cares and troubles are gone
There'll be no more from now on
From now on ...

Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So, Let's sing a song of cheer again

Happy times
Happy nights
Happy days
Are here again!

The music is even better, I just loved it !! :)

Conflict of logic

This has been killing my brain cells over the last few weeks. I had the first company advantage providing project management and services in solar industry in India, but then the national solar mission got delayed at the center due to which projects were kept on hold, and then the budget. Now when everything is set to be on track, there are umpteen companies coming up providing similar services, and they have deep pockets !!

However most of these companies are foreign companies (they charge more n never handled local work) and so the manufacturers are showing interest in my company, however the clauses in solar mission ain't fully announced and there are certain guidelines etc coming up. So the wait continues.

2011 looks great, but how do I pay the rent till then? What do I eat? Finding alternate sources of income has become equally stupid. The only other option is to find alternate business ventures, but they are dependent on other people who are delaying their own work due to xyz reasons.

A good businessman makes money today, a good manager thinks of ways to make money tomorrow, and an entrepreneur has to do both.

Survival for existence officially begins!!!!

Political Update

Black money

The Prime Minister has underlined his commitment to bring back black money deposited in foreign countries and outlined the measures taken to combat the menace that had deprived the country of its resources.

As many as 20 countries were identified for reaching agreements on exchange of information and assistance in tax collection. Negotiations with the Bahamas and Bermuda were over, paving the way for signing of agreements.

The government had sought renegotiation of the tax treaty with Switzerland and talks were held in November to finalise a protocol that would allow for obtaining information in specific cases.

excerpt from The Hindu

Whip on Women's reservation bill, black money, solar mission, increase in petroleum price, a good n strong budget ....
I like the way things are going :) Hope there is a whip on stupid acts in the rule of Mayawati, regionalism of sena and many more such 'desh premis'
The never ending post
